Where does England's loss against Sri Lanka rank amongst the biggest World Cup upsets?
Matches that instantly spring to mind as an England supporter would be our defeat to Ireland in 2011 and losing to Zimbabwe in 1992.
A few others that I recall are
Kenya beating a West Indies team with Lara, Walsh and Ambrose at the 1996 World Cup
Bangladesh beating a Pakistan side with a bowling attack of Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib in the 1999 World Cup
A plumber from Jamaica leading Canada to victory over Bangladesh at the 2003 World Cup
What's your most memorable World Cup upset?
Edit: For those doubting that Sri Lanka's victory is an upset I'd encourage them to consider the following
England are ranked Number 1 in the World compared to Sri Lanka who are number 9
England have won all their most recent bilateral ODI series against all the other sides competing in this World Cup with the exception of Afghanistan because they haven't played them in a bilateral series.
By contrast Sri Lanka lost 8 games in a row and 14 out of their last 15 ODIs against other Test playing nations leading up to this World Cup. They also crashed out of the group stages of the Asia Cup
This same Sri Lanka side were comprehensively beaten in all 3 formats by this England team just 8 months ago - surely a more prevelant stat than what Sri Lanka did in 2007, etc.
Now here is the definition of an "upset" https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/learner-english/upset_3
