I’ll start off with “Switching to the Windows version of the game”:
You can download the game client here. Your existing account you played on PS2 or 360 will work on PC with no issues, in regards to if the account will work or not. The accounts have always been cross-platform whether you played cross-platform or not.
Be sure to download ALL the files to the SAME location before running the installer. You shouldn’t need to install the included direct X (especially if on 8+), and the game should work once updated. This version comes the updated version of POL launcher that works on versions of Windows that are Vista or newer. The launcher will also patch immediately upon installing/running it.
If you need a computer:

Please read through that information to avoid building issues if you choose that route. If you DO run into and build issues, I would also take your technical support questions there.

My builds for this thread.

This is my “absolute bare minimum build” if all you want is to build a desktop that plays XI. It’s meant for someone who has nothing but an XI account and needs everything: tower, speakers, monitor, keyboard, mouse, Windows. The monitor isn’t the greatest but it will display the game, and not be overly tiny. However, the CPU can be replaced with an i5 or an i7 at a later point in time, and a graphics card can always be added. This is meant to be a starting point, and you’ll find that the recommended builds above are better options if you want to start making things more powerful. But something like this will give you a solid starting point.
I've included 4th gen and 6th gen Intel CPU builds because they provide a good level up upgradability, and also because lots of people may already have parts laying around that could be used with a 4th gen build. If you don't have any parts, it may be better to just go with the 6th gen build.

Obviously if you already own one or more copies of Windows it’ll bring costs down. Both machines allow connecting to a TV via HMDI as well, so if your TV has that option you can save on monitor as well. (Monitor is still recommended, but this is mentioned as a means of cutting costs down.)
Also, you can activate Windows 10 using 7, 8, or 8.1 keys. (You install 10 without entering a key, and once the system is installed it will accept one of those keys for activation.) This also means if you already own a machine that has one of those keys listed on it (like a laptop) you should be able to build a new machine, install a fresh copy of 10, then activate it using that serial number. Many university students are also able to get free copies of Windows through their school. You should look into it and see if this may apply to you.
If you want a prebuilt, I’m not going to recommend specific machines. They will cost you more, and I do recommend sites like http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/category/gaming-pcs/ and www.ibuypower.com.
I do not recommend Alienware as they don’t tend to last that long. They have power, but they lack longevity. You’ll find yourself replacing the machine sooner than if you go with the above options.


I will make some laptop recommendations though. Please note, these are not meant to be super high end machines, but low cost laptops that will get you in XI. I did try to at least choose something decent for the price. This machine has a 120GB SSD and will run XI fine. However, don’t think of playing modern games on it. You will be very much out of luck. However at $251 you’re only going to get so much.
For $50 more you can get a similar machine with 8GB of ram, and a larger screen. Windows 7 will also upgrade to 10 for you if you choose to do so. Still limited to 128GB, but it’s an SSD so you’ve got some speed to help run XI.
If you’re willing to spend about $115 more this would be a much better option overall, despite it having a slower hard drive. It has a 5th gen Intel i3 and a 1080p resolution. The 5th gen i3 includes a much stronger integrated graphics than the previous little laptop does, and the machine has a fairly larger screen.
You can also spend about $50 to replace the slow hard drive with a 120-128GB SSD, or even a 240GB one if you can grab one on sale. /buildapcsales is a good place to find what PC hardware is on sale. There is also /buildapcsalesuk
Anything beyond that and you start pushing the $450 range, I would actually recommend looking at your local Best Buy (or similar?) at their openbox deals. Lots of the machines are bought, and returned a few days later because someone decided they didn’t want it, and there is nothing wrong with the machine at all. You may find something you like there.
Forumrider4life pointed out as well, pretty much any Windows based laptop from Wal-mart with a sufficient amount of storage should be able to run the game just fine as well. Not maxed in all cases, but very playable. It will look nicer than a PS2.

If you start breaking $800 I would recommend this:

It’s a Dell, which can be hit or miss. But this machine should run just about anything on the market on medium to high or ultra. Perhaps a few brand spanking new 2016 games will need low. But it’s plenty powerful, and has a 6th gen i5 CPU (6th gen is newest). Comes equipped with a 256GB SSD and a GTX 960m. This IS a gaming laptop. For the cost this is actually a very solid machine, and overall it has decent reviews.
You can use this as a guideline and shop around for whatever you think will meet your needs.

Thunderbolt 3 and external GPU

In addition, anything with a THUNBOLT 3 port will be able to utilize an external Graphics Card in the near future. (Has to be 3, older Thunderbolt won’t work). See this for an example:
Eventually getting an external GPU setup will be pricey in its own way, but wanted to mention it as something to consider in case you find a good deal on a laptop that has a Thunderbolt 3 port on it, but doesn’t have the best integrated graphics.

Gampads/Controllers and Mice:

If you choose to play with a laptop you shouldn’t need a mouse as XI is designed to not need one. However, I would recommend it if you plan to play pretty much anything else aside from emulated games. A gamepad of some kind would go well with XI however.
Xbox one and 360 controllers are plug and play with Windows and work with many games out of the box. I use a PS4 controller myself, and a program called DS4Windows for anything that won’t work with the PS4 controller out of the box. (Some games will, some won’t. For those that won’t DS4Windows makes Windows think it’s a 360 controller) http://ds4windows.com/
Please not that for 360 controllers and Xbox one controllers: Wired 360 controllers, and Xbone controllers plugged into the computer directly, will work without need of a wireless dongle. Wireless 360 controllers require a wireless dongle under every circumstance, and their USB services only serve to charge. Xbox One controllers, if used wirelessly, need a dongle, but WILL work directly plugged in.
There are also USB adapters for using a wide range of controllers you could use, though they may require a little more hands on configuring. (PS2, PSX, Gamecube, Xbox 1, etc...)

Many of us use Windower, found at http://windower.net/. Windower is an unofficial XI software that provides Windowing function to the game, as well as provides plugins to the game which create a myriad of functions. For example there is BoxDestroyer, which keeps track of guesses and helps you unlock treasure chests. There is FFXIDB which adds a minimap to the game. There are tools to show party members TP, provide additional pet information. It's quite the little tool. General rule of thumb is just don't talk about that you're using it in game.

Issues with Nvidia GPU and Intel Integrated in laptops that contain both

This won't be an issue as a general rule if you just want to play the game, but it'll help you understand why it's not playing as well on a machine if you were expecting greater performance from it.

Note that newer laptops with nVidia graphics have this weird setup where old DirectX games run from the integrated GPU on the Intel processor. It is nearly impossible to disable the Intel GPU and use the nVidia one instead. This will cause some performance issues on those laptops. AMD GPUs don't yet have the problem, and desktop GPUs aren't linked together like that.
FFXI is a DirectX 8/9 game, and newer GPUs don't support it directly anymore, they just support DirectX 10, 11, or 12. For older support, they use software emulation for the compatibility, or an Intel GPU if available. Cards with native DirectX 8/9 support haven't been produced in years, and drivers for them for Win8 or Win10 are nonexistant, or nearly so. That's one thing that makes FFXI CPU-heavy on modern systems, the CPU is handling the software emulation of the DirectX layer, instead of the GPU.

Final notes:

For the most part if you already have a machine running Windows, and have a hard drive or SSD with an acceptable amount of space (not that 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, 64GB flash memory stuff) then you should be able to install the game and go. You may have to turn the game’s resolution down to get it to run smoothly, but it will likely run. You may be okay with the 64GB flash memory, but Windows requires a fair bit of space just to run and update. If you’ve got 120GB+, just make sure you have space and you should be good to go. A Mac should run it fine as well so long as it has the correct hardware requirements (it should), but you will need to either look into Wine for OSX, or Bootcamp with Windows.
Also, there are websites like tehkrizz which have downloads for current patches you can use to update the game manually before running updates. http://tehkrizz.net/FFXI/downloads.php If you choose to update the old fashioned way it shouldn't be too bad either. Tehkrizz can drastically cut the time it takes to update the game, but is purely optional if you don't want to fool around with game files.

[Guide] Steam Controller Configuration

I'm making this post because the info was hard to find, and was incomplete.
Using the Steam controller with the Raspberry Pi can be very tricky.
The majority of the guide is thanks to ajn142 with his guide here, the end is my contributions to further this project.
So for starters, I was running this on the Raspberry Pi using the RetroPie distribution. That's working with retroarch and emulationstation. Not sure if this will work for all setups, but I just want to put this info out there, refined.
I AM USING THE DONGLE, this is not a bluetooth guide!

First, make sure your Pi is up to date.
sudo apt-get update 
The we'll upgrade all of our stuff, latest and greatest.
sudo apt-get upgrade 
This extra step may or may not affect you, depending on if you're from the USA.
sudo nano /etc/default/keyboard 
Change the XKBLAYOUT="gb" to XKBLAYOUT="us". This will give the the ability to write # in nano. Else it'll be £.
After everything is updated and upgraded, let's fix an issue before it happens and correct the auto-login that the update breaks.
sudo raspi-config 
Now go to 'Boot Options' -> 'Desktop / CLI' -> 'Console Auto-login'. Choose yes on the reboot when asked.
Let's make sure you have all the tools we need to get this done.

Next, once we're sure you've got all the python tools, we'll get libraries you might not have

Here's where we actually start getting into the controller config stuff. Run each of these commands

Ok, give it a shot, let's do a reboot and see if the controller picks up.

This is where my contributions really kick in. Every thread I saw about using this method complained about how when you turn off the steam controller, it loses connection and you have to either restart the unit, or unplug and replug the dongle. Let's use a very unsophisticated approach to solve this!

We're going to create 3 files to watch the input events on port 0, 1 and 2.

We'll paste the same code from above in both autosteam1 and autosteam2, but we'll change
device='/dev/input/event0' to device='/dev/input/event1' and device='/dev/input/event2' respectively.
This will be the 3 scripts that run and reinitialize the controller when it loses connection. But we have to make these scripts run automatically at boot each time, so we'll at it to crontab.
crontab -e 
Choose nano, that's the editor we'll use.
Now add these 3 lines save and close.

Now give it the good ol' reboot, and you should be good to go!

So how this works is, these scripts listen for the steam button on the first 3 input events, and when it's pushed runs the re-initialization (sc-xbox) script.
