$1,500-$2,000 Photoshop/After Effects/Gaming PC
Looking to upgrade my 9 year-old computer, which is on its last legs and can no longer keep up with either my workflow or leisure.
What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games or programs you will be using.
Not a huge gamer, but would like to run games at 60 FPS with decent graphics (so, high, but max is not needed). Things like Overwatch and other current games. I do a lot of work in graphic design, video/audio editing, so Photoshop/After Effects/Audition are a must on running smoothly as a workflow (for example, I can't currently make any use of Particular in AE, because even adding one minor instance of it takes forever to render the preview. This needs to change to where I can smoothly edit and revise within AE).
What is your maximum budget before rebates/shipping/taxes?
$2,000, but would prefer $1,500 if doable. Open to options.
When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Soon as possible, unless I should wait until - say - Black Friday for any considerable discounts. I'm not sure if PC parts go on sale then or not.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ToweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc\)
Tower to fit all the new innards in, and OS. My monitor (20x12) is old, works fine, but I'm open to upgrading to a if there have been any tech advancements in the last ten years that are worthwhile (screens that help with strained eyesight, given how often my work has me in front of a screen). Also willing to consider if a substantial size difference won't break the budget, but otherwise, my current monitor works fine.
Which country (and state/province) will you be purchasing the parts in? If you're in US, do you have access to a Microcenter location?
North Carolina.
If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? Brands and models are appreciated.
I have 16 GBs of Ram (4 sticks), but they are DDR2, Vengeance LP's. I imagine I will have to upgrade to new, DDR3 ram.
Will you be overclocking? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line? CPU and/or GPU?
I'm extremely illiterate when it comes to these types of things, but from what I can tell, yes, so long as it's safe, I'd love to learn to overclock and have it come in handy in my work. So I'd like to start right away, just don't know where to start.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
SSD extremely preferred for the speed they offer, with a harddrive for storage. I don't need more than those two.
Do you have any specific case preferences (Size like ITX/microATX/mid-towefull-tower, styles, colors, window or not, LED lighting, etc), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
Function over form. I don't care what it looks like, so long as it works. (But hey, if it comes in orange I'll take that. I'm a sucker for orange)
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? If you do need one included, do you have a preference?
Yes. Though I far prefer the use of Windows 7, I imagine it'll get phased out soon, so Windows 10.
Extra info or particulars:
I won't need a harddrive beyond 3TB. My video editing work takes up space, but it's not a daily affair and I have a portable drive that outdated project files go into.
I don't foresee working with 3D much at all. My video editing is mostly particle effects and overlays, and my art is strictly 2D.
As mentioned, I'm illiterate about a lot of this stuff (building a PC, overclocking, cooling systems, etc), but I learn fast, so any links to sources that breaks down the esoteric verbiage/explains what's what and the how of things in a way a newbie can understand would help me a ton.
Thanks a ton for any help. I appreciate your time, and any suggestions! If I missed anything or you have any questions, just gimme a holler. =)
